Stephen King or the creators of cable’s “Eureka!” couldn’t have scripted it better. That little place of the United States, often called fondly by its natives as “God’s Armpit” (I swear!) and better known as Unusual Jersey, has had a banner summer. “Banner”, that is, if you consider the media coverage of that has rained down (more on that later) on the state since this past June.

Perhaps we’d best initiate at the beginning of the summer. The school district of Willingboro, located in Burlington County, ended the school year with not only no superintendent of schools but with a frenzied last-ditch anxiety to obtain State funding for its woefully inadequate (and consistently defeated by township voters) school budget. Over the past three years, Willingboro has gone though a succession of superintendents, most recently a gentleman by the name of Alonzo K. Alonzo had been fired by the Willingboro BOE quite a while back, but continued to receive a particularly cushy salary and benefits. When the Board took more formal action, Alonzo shot back with a volley of lawsuits asking for, among other things, his continuation of salary and pension – this for school district which is approximately $100 million in debt, still has no permanent superintendent, and were denied State relief for their budget.

On that sour note, the Recent Jersey legislate, having turned down Willingboro and other school districts and substantially cutting Spot wait on to education even further than the previous year, continued to hack out its own State budget. In a state which has the highest percentage of property tax rates (our current annual property taxes for our home in southern Unusual Jersey is a whopping $17,200! (again, I swear!), the Govenor decided that more revenue could be derived in a simple stroke of the pen – increase the state sales tax from 6% to 7%. Now, proponents (mostly the governor and his staff and their families) touted that this was only an additional penny on every dollar increase. Try explaining that to the owners of car dealerships, boat dealerships, and other large-ticket items; those additional pennies on the dollar can add up quickly, and what’s to prevent folks from crossing one of numerous bridges over to Pennsylvania, where a 6% sales tax still reigns?

Upping the ante even further, our trusty Governor added a sales tax to a number of previously untaxed items, including massages, tanning salons, limousine services and more. Wow! For the Jersey gal who likes to pick a car service to get her tan and massage, this was a massive blow!

The legislature and Governor came to (figurative) blows when they did not have a budget in place by the federally mandated date of July lst. Working feverishly over a long and very hot Fourth of July holiday, they finally managed to hammer out an agreement – which included that pesky 7% sales tax and taxes on other ‘personal luxury’ items as well. During that four day period, the State of Recent Jersey not-so-quietly went out of business. Public beaches, public parks, state hospitals, and even – horror of horros! – Atlantic City casinos were slated to close up shop, over the course of several days. Casino owners and managers squawked the loudest, claiming that they were losing $10,000,000 to $30,000,000 in revenue per day. As luck would have it, the casinos – which are overseen by state regulatory agencies – were not forced to shutter their doors. But it does leave behind the nagging question – if each casino rakes in between $10,000,000 to $30,000,000 each and every day, maybe the Spot should steal a closer look at how it can funnel some of that money into its have coffers….

The heat wave that started that Fourth of July weekend has continued on an intermittent basis ever since in the Garden State. They were also accompanied by a series of humonguous thunder storms that brought not only driving, horizontal rains but hail as well. There’s nothing quite like the sound of hail pounding on your window air conditioner to remind you that yes, it is indeed summer! And with heat waves and thunderstorms come rolling power blackouts and cable disconnects. Yes, folks, there were indeed far too many days without any air conditioning but also no reruns of “The Andy Griffith Show”, “I Love Lucy”, “Project Runway”, and “Dog: The Bounty Hunter”. These Current Jersey cultural icons took a black and sordid toll on our collective spirits – along with the fact that most of us, at various periods of time, were sweating like pigs.

To make matters even worse, those of us sweltering in the heat also opened up our morning newspapers to find out that space funding for national security measures – i.e., anxiety preparation, training, number of security job positions – had been dramatically cut. The county in which our family lives, Burlington County, took a 60% plus hit in the amount of money that the State would have given us for security measures in case of a local or national emergency. Perhaps the Governor expects those of us in folksy, somewhat rural southern New Jersey to just hole up in our barns, with our candles and hand-held lanters firmly in place? The more likely scenariou would be thousands of us throwing ourselves prostrate on our front lawns, weeping as rain, hail, perhaps nuclear waste, rains down upon us?

But there have been a few colorful spots, too! A 21 year old exotic dancer/stripper in northern New Jersey was discovered to be harboring several human skulls, plus a (poorly severed) human hand in a jar of Formaldehyde. This discovery was made by EMT’s responding to a 911 call regarding a suicidal male at her residence. (Said “suicidal male” has yet to be discovered or identified; perhaps they have not yet gotten around to checking her basement or attic.) As of now, the young performer – who was allegedly given the severed hand by a male medical student who was especially smitten with the dancer – has yet to exhibit up for her court date. Perhaps she is making up for lost time at the casinos? And why FIVE skulls? Was the mystery ‘suicidal male’ a potential candidate for the Number Six state on her mantle?

On a certainly more sombre and less colorful impress, the township of Riverside, New Jersey has passed its contain version of an illegal alien law. The law makes it a felony to knowingly harbor and/or employ illegale aliens. Riverside, which is not far from our own home, is somewhat of a paradox unto itself. For decades, it was a blue-class working town whose economy revolved around a glimpse manufacturing company in particular. When the watch company closed its doors about 15 years ago, the nature of the town itself changed dramatically. For whatever reason, Riverside is now called home by an extremely large Brazilian/Portuguese population; I have no clue as to how this came to be. What I do know is that my cleaning ladies for the past ten years have all been Brazilians. Their ravishing much total lack of command of the English language, however, is offset by many qualities. These ladies are extremely hard workers, very flexible, very interested to please and do a trustworthy job. They also do the quality and kind of work that I am frankly hard-pressed to think that most ‘American’ workers could or would do.. I don’ honestly know if they were/are accurate immigrants or not. All I do know is that they are wonderful workers and very pleasant, involving women with fascinating tales about their home country of Brazil. We watched Brazil play in the World Cup together as we sat in my kitchen.

The Riverside ordinance is aimed primarily at Brazilians. According to one resident who spoke in favor of the ordinance at the recent town council meeting at which it was approved, “Riverside was built on the sweat and determination of German, Italian and Irish families…these people (Brazilians) come in as illegal aliens, they pay no taxes, yet their kids relieve our schools and are served by Riverside’s government. It just isnt’t fair…” It will be interesting over the rest of this summer to see the lawsuits and lawyers rolling into slight Riverside with fair challenges to this township ordinance. (Actually, one July 28th, officials of a Latino human rights organization have already petitioned the state’s Attorney General to review the ordinance on the basis of its constitutionality.) Riverside residents appear to be totally in favor of the ordinance. As one letter to the editor of the Burlington County Times stated on July 30, “I just got a current job, and I had to make proof that I was eligible to work as a legal citizen. Why don’t these illegal aliens work? Because they can’t produce those papers for themselves. Our schools are overcrowded, our police department understaffed and overworked because of this huge increase in residents. When they have children, their children are automatically citizens, but their parents are not. This situation has caused problems with our utilities as well, with water and sewer…I am not at all opposed to immigration. We have many people who came here from Korea, Brazil, Germany, Italy and other countries all on a correct basis. I oppose the ‘illegal’ in immigration, not immigration itself…”

I hope that this woman official is not the same one who was charged last week with interfering with the arrest of her live-in boyfriend over a traffic violation. Apparently, at least according to published reports, her boyfriend of two years was stopped by the state police, at which time it was determined that he was driving with expired auto insurance and was wanted on numerous outstanding raffic violations. His lady friend drove to the site of the incident and ‘encouraged’ the police not to tow away his car and to release him. She is currently under investigation now herself as a result of allegedly numerous cases of ‘fixing’ her friend’s traffic violations and tickets over a several year period.

When I first began this article, it was in a lighthearted vein, hence I originally included it into the “Humor” category. As I continued to document what has been going on of late in New Jersey, it is no longer humorous. It is frankly a sad state of events that we Unusual Jersey residents find ourselves in of leisurely. It’s no small wonder, then, that a considerable number of residents are fleeing the state – including ourselves – for ‘greener pastures’ than those of the Garden State…

If you’re thinking about starting your own itsy-bitsy business, one of the important things to consider is small business health insurance. Whether it’s just you and a secretary, or if you have an office full of employees, determining the best options for insurance companies is a process that can’t be ignored. In this article, we’ll explore the various facets of insuring your small business.

Companies that Specialize in Puny Business Health Insurance

There are an incredible number of insurance companies ready to serve the need- of small businesses. Selecting from among them may seem like hard work, but overall, it’s important to go with a company with a track record and long-term reliability. There’s no sense in spending the next five-to-ten years switching from one insurance company to another. By doing your homework, you can hopefully eliminate this problem. Hiring a good accountant can actually save you a lot of time in finding the right insurance packages for your puny business. Still, it’s important to be informed.

The Rising Cost of Health Care

Many people are discouraged from starting their own itsy-bitsy businesses because of the rising cost of health care. In fact, the cost of healthcare in 2005 increased by abut 10% nationwide, according to the National Business Group on Health. Apparently these costs have increased for the last five or six years, making it tough for small businesses to stay afloat.

With rising costs, small businesses need to consider alternatives like Cafeteria plans, co-pays, employee contribution to health care and etc.

Understanding the HMOS and PPOS

HMOs

A Health Maintenance Organization or HMO is a full fledged organization of healthcare providers. This includes the whole gamut of doctors, hospitals, and other health agencies that contract with insurances companies. They usually offer their services at a fixed price.

HMO plans are rather rigid and restrictive. They offer good care, but have many rules that must be followed. An insured person who is a member of an HMO, has to choose a primary care physician, who in turn manages all aspects of the person’s healthcare. Individuals are limited to choosing a physician who is a member of the HMO network. This primary care provider is the only physician who can refer the member to a specialist, if one is needed, and that specialist must be part of the network as well.

Miniature businesses often go with HMOs because they are cost effective. Premiums are lower than most plans.

PPOs

A Preferred Provider Organization, or PPO, is less rigid and restrictive. Because PPOs have contracts with the insurance companies, the member is allowed to see any physician he or she likes, but if the physician is not portion of the PPO network, the member will probably pay more out of pocket costs. The whole premium isn’t covered. Unlike an HMO, you do not need a referral to see a specialist.

Although PPOs cost more, they are often the preferred choice of many employees because there are fewer rules.

Self-Insurance, Another Option

There’s an option to limited business health insurance called self-insuring where companies do not buy health insurance for their employees, but take full responsibility, through their company assets, to cover claims. If no claims are made during the year, the exiguous business saves money, and can also provide rewards to employees with better health. Many microscopic businesses are switching to this option, which also provide wellness programs to help people stop smoking, lose weight, and pick up into shape to decrease their chances of illness.

Of course, there are major risk factors interested with self-insuring. For example, if a program member employee, becomes ill and their health care expenses very high, the small business can run into major expenses it cannot screen. This is where a “stop loss” insurance company comes in. This gives the small business a safety net if claims are over a distinct predetermined level.

Health Care Scams

Because limited businesses are especially concerned with saving money, there are health care scam artists out there that target entrepreneurs. These companies exhaust professional marketing techniques, brochures, selling points, and they may even pay itsy-bitsy claims, but when a large claim comes in, they refuse to pay, and often disappear. This is why it’s important for the small business owner to do his homework and only go with a company that has credibility and a track characterize.

Buying your first vehicle is a very well-known step in your life. Deem back to the important things that have happened to you; turning 16, your first kiss, your first boy friend or girl friend, buying that first vehicle. You will always remember that first vehicle purchase.

When you are young you have expectations for your first vehicle but as we all know those expectations can be a bit of a reach unless money is no object. So, you need to really do some research and make sure your purchase is a superb one.

Here is a list of things that I have used to help me make decisions on purchasing vehicles. Things that I didn’t initially think about that really ended up being a factor in my purchases or leases.

1) First and foremost, know what you can afford. The vehicle you may be able to afford may not be the vehicle you want to drive. The first time you set in the vehicle you just purchased, regardless of what kind it is, you will love it.

2) Speak with an insurance agent about cost and options. You are going to need the insurance to protect your purchase and you need to not only know what kind of coverage you can get, you also need to factor in the insurance payment into your budget.

3) Know the cost for putting and keeping your vehicle on the road. You will need to factor licensing and registration fees into your budget. You can get this information from you Department of Motor Vehicles. Note that dealerships typically handle this for you but know that you still are going to pay for it and upon renewal you are on your own.

4) Develop sure the vehicle you purchase is compatible with your life style. If you play an instrument or a sport that requires a lot or room, vehicle that seats two without a back seat may not be the best lift for you.

5) Make sure the vehicle is comfortable to set in and drive. Not having enough leg room or head room can beget for a very uncomfortable ride.

6) Use the internet to research and compare different vehicles to one another to determine which has options that fit your wants and needs best.

7) Ask people you trust about dealerships and salesman that they would recommend. Dealerships and salesman can either make the first time buyers experience immense or waste it completely. If you don’t feel comfortable with either, move on.

Look to the internet for purchases or leasing. There are various sites such as www.autobytel.com that you can use to take, lease or unprejudiced research. I suggest Autobytel because I have personally used it to purchase and lease vehicles before and I have found it to be a wonderful tool.

9) Use Consumer Reports to get additional information about the vehicle you are looking at purchasing. You can get a lot of additional safety information here such as crash test rating and air bag information.

10) Looking into leasing options. Leasing options are very nice and each vehicle company offers different options which may make the transaction more affordable.

11) Stare into different financing options. I would strongly suggest that if you belong to a Credit Union, look at that for you financing option.

When you are making decisions on major purchases like vehicles refer to “Maslow’s hierarchy of needs” as a guide. Maslow’s hierarchy is based on a person’s needs with the base line needs such as food and water being the foundation, once these needs are filled then you can go to the next level. (See link for more information).

So make sure that the base needs are filled. In this case if the vehicle fits your budget, gas mileage needs, life style, and has well-behaved safety ratings then you can worry about color, leather vs. cloth seats and such.

What you need to know about finding auto insurance

All drivers know that finding honorable auto insurance can be a torturous experience. There are so many companies to choose from, so many options available, and so many different types of plans you can pick.

This year, auto insurance is expected to rise in price by an average of 5%, which is a large amount, considering the average yearly cost to drivers is around one thousand dollars.

It is not easy to understand auto insurance, a fact that helps the industry develop huge profits off of drivers.

Four Types of insurance coverage

Auto insurers provide four types of coverage: body injury liability, which covers damages if you or anyone else is injured in an accident. Property liability coverage insures you in case you damage any piece of property or another vehicle. These first two are essential, and in fact, you can’t drive legally without them. They are required by law.

The other two are Collision insurance, which provide coverage no matter whose fault the accident is, and Comprehensive coverage, which covers the cost of repairs if your car is damaged in any other way than in an accident. For example, if a tree branch falls onto your windshield.

Compare and Contrast auto insurance prices

The auto insurance business is highly competitive. It is to your benefit to get several–or a hundred–insurance quotes. This way you can derive competitive rates and achieve some money.

Two online sources you can expend to find premiums for many insurance companies are insweb.com and insure.com.

Another generous thing to do is talk to people about their experience with their auto insurance provider. This is the best map to find out which companies have the best customer service and which companies it is best to avoid. Word of mouth is very helpful in the insurance world.

Often, you can find a good deal on auto insurance by signing on with your home insurance carrier. You might be able to get a discount if you give them your added business. This is always worth looking into and may be the cheapest way to go.

One way to lower your auto insurance premium is by maintaining a good credit score.

It is in your best interest–and not only for auto insurance, but for your life in general–to keep tabs on your credit score. Often there are inconsistencies on your credit report, errors, or otherwise incorrect information. It is possible to have these taken off of your credit report.

The three major credit-rating agencies are Equifax, Experian, and Trans Union. By law, you can now get a free credit report once a year.

It is important to monitor your credit portray because if you keep your score high, it can be of great benefit to you. Saving money on auto insurance is just one benefit. There are many more.

The more difficulty you put into finding the right auto insurance carrier, the more you will attach, and more importantly, the better coverage you receive. Grasp the time, do some research, and find the legal policy. Good luck.

Obama’s Moment in Time

There are special moments in time that last forever. Those snapshots of history that are indelibly engraved on the world’s collective psyche. Can’t everyone visualize Neil Armstrong taking that giant leap for mankind? Don’t you still feel that sense that we can overcome anything when you peek the picture of JFK jr. saluting the coffin of his fallen father? How about Jesse Owens snubbing Hitler to his face, on his own turf, winning the Olympic gold in Berlin, or American women at home building airplanes and tanks during WWII to encourage the struggle against tyranny while their husbands, sons and brothers were fighting and dying abroad to ensure the ideals of freedom? From the Wright brothers defying gravity, to Charles Lindbergh arriving in a jubilant Paris after the world’s first Trans-Atlantic flight, from Edison’s first light bulb, to the images from beyond, courtesy of the Hubble Space Telescope, from the first telephone, to the PC and Internet..these are our proud American moments. These are the kinds achievements that defined America. This is when we had the world’s respect and adoration.

Something happened. Somewhere along the line the American gravy suppose jumped its tracks. Somehow, we went from Reagan’s “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall”, to Clinton’s “I did not have sexual relations with that woman.” Somehow we’ve been torn from Kennedy’s “Children are the world’s most valuable resource and its best hope for the future” and arrived at Bush’s “Childrens do learn.” The station shuttle disintegrating over Texas is our new memory of the space race. The water-logged, stranded masses of our citizens waving at a helicopter, begging for food and water from their rooftops in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina are now the images seared into our consciousness. We failed our absorb, and the world watched. We have managed to go from the carriers of the torch of freedom, to the great Satan of oppression in the Middle-East, not my words, theirs. We have lost the faith that was once entrusted to us by the world. We have defined how the noteworthy can fall. Scandals and lies now trumpet our arrival. Scheming and deception are what have become expected from us. The quest for riches and power is now seen as our agenda. We are tip-toeing the fine line that is the tipping point of how we will be forever judged by our global peers.

But just when the light of a prosperous future was at its dimmest, lightning struck. At the Democratic National Convention in 2004, a cinder fell into the kindling that may once again stoke the great fire of the “American Dream.” It was a day meant to celebrate John Kerry, the Democratic Presidential nominee, but that was not the snapshot that history had in mind. Trotting onto the stage came an unknown to many, a skinny black guy with close cropped hair, big ears, and a humorous name. If you weren’t from Illinois, this was to be your meet and greet with Barack Obama. From start to finish, he electrified. The tears and cheers from the roaring crowd were testament that the vision of a great America had been revived. This crowd had felt the audacity of hope.

There are words that every American has been reciting since their youth and on this day they would finally rep their voice again in Barack Obama. He pounded his foundation theme with a flair unseen since the days of Kennedy. No red states, no blues states, but the United States. Not a black America or white America, not a Latino America or Asian America, but the United States of America. It felt like those words we all memorized in childhood could mean something again, that they would sprout wings and cruise. You remember them…indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. When the remark stopped and the smoke cleared, a simple truth had been crystallized, America wanted to be for something again and with that realization, a political rock star had been born. John Kerry never did win the Presidency. Time had decided to pass him by.

The buzz from that speech reverberated throughout the Democratic party and hasn’t stopped since. The spotlight was turned on him and he has not disappointed. People started to look into this fresh fresh face that had exploded onto the scene and instead of buyers remorse, they actually really liked what was under the hood.

In October 2002, while still a state senator, he stood before an anti-war crowd gathered at the Federal Plaza in Chicago. Again, he had delivered. His speech was great, it was powerful, eloquent and well received. The true magic of his words, however, would require one more element to really allege the volumes about his judgement. Time. Today, more than 5 years later, fair listen to his words, “I know that an invasion of Iraq without a sure rationale and without strong international support will only fan the flames of the Middle East, and encourage the worst, rather than best, impulses of the Arab world, and strengthen the recruitment arm of al-Qaeda.” That is just one line. If you listen to the whole thing, his accuracy is frightful. His judgement bordered on clairvoyance that no one today can bid. His advisors and friends told him not to do it, they told him it was political suicide to stand up against a President hooked on war and a nation that was misled to follow. He didn’t listen. He did what he has always done, tell the icy, hard truth as best as he sees it and let the cards fall where the may.

The country started paying more attention as the war in Iraq started spiraling out of control. Our bravest, young American patriots were dying. Iraq had fallen into a bloody civil war. Al-Queda had gained strength and was recruiting able bodies right out of the vacuum of hatred that we helped produce. His prophecy had unfolded and the whispers about this now US Senator from Illinois started spreading like wildfire. As the blunder of the Iraq war drained America of the hope and riches it would need to tackle the challenges facing us at home, whispers turned to screams and Obama came to a conclusion, this was to be his moment in time. America needed him and he came to realize Dr. King’s ” fierce urgency of now.”

Barack Obama announced his Presidential candidacy on February 10th, 2007 in Springfield Illinois. It was a cold day out, it felt like 5 degrees. Would anybody prove? Would anyone care? Was he, and his message of hope and unity just another flash in the pan? When he took the podium and looked over the crowd, there were about 16,000 faces looking back and they were fired up and ready to go. There were different shapes and sizes of all colors and age, men, women and children from all walks of life. His movement had started. America was ready for change and his message was clear. He ended that speech with a plea to the American people that is the core of his candidacy, “..if you will join me in this improbable quest, if you feel destiny calling, and see as I see, a future of endless possibility stretching before us; if you sense, as I sense, that the time is now to shake off our slumber, and slough off our terror, and fabricate noble on the debt we owe past and future generations, then I’m ready to take up the cause, and march with you, and work with you. Together, starting today, let us finish the work that needs to be done, and usher in a new birth of freedom on this Earth.” His message resonated.

As his campaign went on, the crowds kept coming. 24,000 in New York, 20,000 in Austin and Atlanta, 10,000 in Oakland, the list goes on. These were political rallies, yet the atmosphere at each one was like a rabid college football game. The legions came thirsty and left quenched with hope. The money was rolling in by record amounts. There have never been as many small donors give to a political campaign. There has never been a donor base with the breadth his campaign has seen. Regular Americans were getting involved in record shattering numbers to push this movement to a grand finish.

The only bump in the road seemed to be the early debates. Let’s just say, he survived. The 30 second sound-bite format didn’t really suit his style at the beginning. He seemed to be forcing himself to wrap his broad thoughts and reasoning into tasty media-sized morsels His opponents were much better suited to accommodate. As his national poll numbers remained flat after his initial surge, the media and some nervous supporters started to call him out to show some nasty. He announced he would, in the NY times. He got as execrable as classy would allow. He drew his distinctions but didn’t sucker-punch. He disagreed without being disagreeable. His poll numbers improved while his opponents regressed. The buzz was help.

The next test would be his most daunting yet. History showed that the Jefferson/Jackson Dinner showcase of candidates could beget or break a Democratic hopeful. Would he be able to push the wave that had started to form? Or, would he fall flat on the grandest stage yet, going head to head with his enemies? Half of the equation at this Iowa event is a note of force. His inspired following showed up in full glory and dominated. The first test was passed with flying colors. He would be the last to speak. Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, had been introducing each candidate with “the next President of the United States…” When she struck that chord introducing Barack Obama, the air exploded. Obama would go on to announce one of his greatest speeches. When it was time to put up or shut up, he would again, screech.

Every now and then destiny shows her cards and dares you to beat her. That time is upon us and it will be up to American voters to beat her hand. Those memories of America that the world recalls with adoration need an injection of novel life. Our sullied reputation needs a modern champion to restore honor and integrity to our name. We must once again take the bold steps as a nation that set an example to the world and restore our place as the keepers of the key. We are face to face with realities that will test our collective mettle and it will take a country standing shoulder to shoulder to take them on. Our next leader will be the vehicle to our future and the image by which we are measured`. Our next leader must be able to right old wrongs without the hindrance of past mistakes and bad judgements. The next President’s slate must be clean to have any leverage to talk to our friends and enemies alike if we want any chance to gain them side with reason. Our next leader must be free to negotiate without the obstacles of past votes or party stands. The truth must be the foundation of our principles and the basis of all of our actions. Our next leader must be forged in the mold of greatness and tempered with compassion for us to stand a chance.

John F Kennedy once said, “A revolution is coming – a revolution which will be peaceful if we are wise enough; compassionate if we care enough; successful if we are fortunate enough – but a revolution which is coming whether we will it or not. We can affect its character, we cannot alter its inevitability.” That revolution is here right now and judgment must be its steward. Hopefully, when all is said and done the American people will have taken great care in wielding their power to decide and realize, it is Barack Obama’s moment in time.

You have found the perfect car, now it’s time to find the perfect car insurance. Do you need full coverage or liability coverage, and what’s the difference? Comparing the different types of car insurance coverage and concept car insurance terminology can be confusing, but it is necessary in order to procure the best and most affordable coverage.

Full coverage insurance is actually a combination of collision and comprehensive insurance coverage. Collision insurance covers wound to your car caused by a collision with another object. Comprehensive insurance covers damage to the insured car from theft, broken glass, vandalism, and weather afflict. Full coverage usually covers towing, rental reimbursement, uninsured motorist coverage, and medical payment coverage.

Liability auto coverage only covers the cost of the other car involved when you are liable for the accident. It provides the other motorist protection against distress and injuries that you caused, including property damage. Most states require liability insurance coverage.

When deciding which type of insurance to get, you should also take into consideration the age and condition of your car. Make sure your coverage matches the value of your car. With newer, more expensive cars, you may prefer full coverage. Older cars may not need as much coverage, so you may prefer liability insurance.

When deciding which type of insurance to get, also take into consideration the deductible. Your deductible will cost more for full coverage insurance. It will be lower for liability coverage, but remember, you must then pay to repair your car.

It’s important to shop around and compare coverage policies and rates with different agencies. Full coverage insurance and liability coverage insurance may vary agency to agency. Read your policy carefully and make sure you understand what you are buying.

I sometimes feel that purchasing auto insurance is like spinning the roulette wheel in Vegas. You enter all the information requested by the insurance agency, click a button, and a number magically appears. Only the result doesn't have as much to do with where you dwelling your chip as how you've driven cars in the past.

Traffic Citations & Accidents

The most common causes of high auto insurance rates are traffic citations and accidents. If you are given a ticket for speeding or if you cause a serious accident on the highway, your auto insurance company will determine that you have a higher risk of making a claim in the future. Consequently, they will charge you more to maintain your insurance.

Age & Gender

Young male drivers pay much more for auto insurance than older female drivers. It's a numbers game, just like the aforementioned roulette wheel, and the insurance industry has learned to hedge its bets against male drivers under the age of 25. This isn't something you can change, but you can ensure you don't incur traffic citations or cause auto accidents to avoid compounding the problem.

Year, Perform & Model of Car

What you drive can also cause high auto insurance rates. According to CarInsurance.com, you will spend more on car insurance if you purchase a high-end truck or SUV than if you stuck with a mid-range sedan or hatchback. Cars with more powerful engines, greater upgrades and safety flaws will also cost more to insure.

Occupation Type & Location

Other causes of high auto insurance rates include the type of work you do and how long a commute you peruse every morning. If you employ your vehicle for work—as a traveling salesperson, for instance—the car insurance company knows you use more time late the wheel, and are therefore more likely to file a claim. It is also true that if your commute is longer, your auto insurance rates will be higher.

Residence & Storage

It's better to store your car in a garage (or at least a carport) than in the driveway or on the street. Cities with lower populations and fewer instances of car wrecks make auto insurance rates cheaper, as well. You might get a lower rate if you live in a gated community or a neighborhood with private security. It all depends on your circumstances.

Avoiding High Auto Insurance Rates

With everything else being equal, you will be able to avoid high auto insurance rates if you drive safely and use a low-key vehicle. Just as you should split your bets rather than relying on straight-up chips, you should do your best to give the car insurance company a few reasons to lower your premiums.

You can't control your age and gender, and you shouldn't change your city of residence or occupation for the sole purpose of lowering your premiums. So take advantage of discounts to lower your auto insurance rates and drive as safely as you can.

The flood zone that makes up Matoaka, WV has a population of which nearly 30% is beneath the poverty line. Prone to flash flooding, the area is essentially a money sink, costing home-owners hundreds or thousands in repairs and flood insurance premiums. When the chance for a FEMA buyout finally came, it was rejected by the town’s mayor, Todd Colonna. Matoaka’s town mayor should have followed the usual procedure and held a town meeting to develop a decision regarding the buyout.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) sets aside funds specifically for the purpose of buying floodplain structures and knocking down the buildings, allowing the land remaining to be untouched and green. The purpose of this is to keep people from getting into bad situations, trapped in perilous environments because of houses that flood periodically. The water wreaks havoc on everything in the home, destroying electronics, ruining carpets, and flooding car engines. The structural damage done to the house can be disastrous. Mud and dirt is often deposited on the floor as water levels rise. Any soft surfaces such as upholstered furniture, soft toys, and mattresses must be thrown away or cleaned only by professionals if flood water has contaminated them. These are all things that many residents in Matoaka can’t afford, leaving them with no option but to suffer sewage-contaminated items if sewage lines have broken. Even the walls of homes can be made unsafe and should be removed to keep from being health risks, but those are unrealistic replacements for an already-poor population to make every couple of years at least.

The primary reason that Mayor Colonna was foul to reject the buyout without town council input, or even the directly democratic method of letting citizens vote to decide or letting individuals participate in the buyout if they so chose, is because it is immoral for one man to make such life-altering decisions for others. Where will Mayor Colonna’s commitment to preserving history be when the town’s hundreds of inhabitants are removing water from their basements and replacing ruined or unsanitary carpets? Will he be there to explain to them that promoting the Hatfield-McCoy ATV trail is more important than their thousands of dollars lost? 19.9% of Matoaka’s residents are above the age of 65, and many of them are on fixed incomes. Will they be compensated if the town never regains its old life and their meager incomes are wasted on costly repairs? People waited and hoped for years for a FEMA buyout. If another one doesn’t come for another decade and, as the last decade went, there are another six floods in those ten years, will Mayor Colonna be offering personal apologies to the people whose money he needlessly wasted on that slim ray of hope that Matoaka would again become lively and fruitful?

I will grant that Colonna’s reasons are, at least partly, proper. The reasons he gives include a hope that Matoaka will once again become a flourishing small town with profitable business and an active community. That is certainly not a bad reason for his decision, even if I disagree and think that the decision itself was bad. However, many people doubt that an interest in the town’s future overrides his financial investment in the town. The “historical” buildings that he wants to protect have been flooded beyond all repair. Mayor Colonna and his Town Manager, Kelly Colonna (his wife) have bought buildings in the town such as the venerable hotel for $600. Tenants in the buildings that he owns live in unpleasant conditions which go unnoticed because of the lack of people to inspect such buildings in Matoaka; tenants are not allowed to own washers and driers, giving them no choice but to go to the laundromat that Mayor Colonna owns. The only convenience store in the town, also owned by them, stocks massively overpriced and often-outdated food. This takes advantage of the relatively poor population, many of whom can’t get to another store without a forty-five minute walk. If any of these are indicative of his real motives, then Mayor Colonna clearly prioritizes buildings over the people that live in them. The existence of all of these factors combined casts strong doubt over his intentions, at the very least making it self-evident that he should not be the only one weighing in on the choice.

In conclusion, it seems clear to the majority of Matoaka’s residents as well as to me that Mayor Colonna’s interest in the town is too questionable and varied to allow him to be the arbiter in this matter. Though there will be a county commission meeting to try to overturn his decision that should never have come to pass, the residents of Matoaka should have at the very least had an opportunity to be heard in a town council meeting before the offer was rejected. Mayor Colonna should have followed standard procedure instead of letting his apparent hope for financial glean affect the lives of townspeople.

As released by the North Carolina Department of Agriculture, the North Carolina Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler announced that live stock farmers across the situation of North Carolina will succor from two high profile monetary donations. The North Carolina State Grange has donated $5,000.00 and North Carolina Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Agency has donated $10,000.00 to assist farmers across the location in acquiring feed for live stock.

The ongoing drought is creating an extremely difficult situation for farmers, which is sure to worsen as the winter months advance. It is anticipated that the state will experience a shortfall of around 800,000 round bales of hay feed for live stock. Already a network has been established between crop and livestock farmers. Crop farmers who have drought damaged soybean and corn crops have offered to bale soybean and corn crops for live stock use.

“The North Carolina Farm Bureau has once again demonstrated their commitment to our farmers by helping them with the cost of feeding animals,” Troxler said. “Their help is greatly needed and greatly appreciated.”

When asked about the Grange’s commitment to the effort, Jimmy Gentry, the Grange’s president, said, “This is a critical time for all livestock producers in the state, and the N.C. State Grange is happy to be a partner in the hay relief effort. It is extremely important to help each other in times of need, and I am thankful that the State Grange is able to provide this needed assistance.”

The North Carolina Department of Agriculture is also urging live stock farmers across the state to utilize the Hay Alert Web plot. This allows farmers to stay in touch with one another though a free listing service. Farmers who are seeking as well as selling hay may post through a database which may be searched by county, state, and forage type. The address for the site is www.ncagr.com/HayAlert. The service is also available by phone by calling 1-866-506-6222 weekdays between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m.

The National Weather Service recently released their seasonal extended forecast which includes a projection for lower than average rain drop amounts for much of the state. Many fear this will only serve to worsen an already bad area. N.C. Farm Bureau President Larry Wooten said the drought is having a tremendous impact on the state’s people and agricultural industry. “This is especially true for the livestock industry,” he said. “There is – and will be – huge shortages of forage feeds to get cattle, horses, sheep and goats through the winter. In that respect, NCDA&CS requested funds to aid in the transportation of hay – both from within and outside the location – to our producers in North Carolina.”
